Helplessness..

I know this post won't have a great reach, but I need to get this out somwhere, anywhere. I was in an inter college camp which was organised for the enrichment of us students. The camp was amazing, barring the usual lack of civic sense of some students. The food was beyond great, we ate icecreams, sweets, pizzas, salads and what not for 10 days straight! That too free of cost and we were even given TA. It's beyond incredible that my country has taken such an initiative to foster a conducive learning environment for the youth! There were some dogs on the campus as well, and there was this one particular dog in need of attention. After a lot of calling around we settled on a nearby animal hospital which would treat the dog and discharge it for 2000 rupees, which including everything. We thought about pitching in one by one and the concerned students (including me) could easily raise the amount by asking our respective colleges. Even 40-50 rupees from 50 students woudl gave done the job or we were even seeking permission to buy medicines form outside and apply it to the dog before leaving for our homes. We got to know about this dog only a day before we were supposed to leave so it made all of this a bit rushed and difficult. When I asked the Supervisor of the camp for permission, he said that although my intentions are noble, we should focus on humanity first and tend to them as many are dying and living indignified lives. Dogs and other creatures, being below humans can fend for themselves, eat out of trash and survive easily; that we should prioritize humans and only then will the animals take care of themselevs as more people gain the financial freedom to care for pets. And that the dog would just come back and vet injured again.Althought my mind agreed with him my heart just couldn't. Does that mean every organisation aimed at saving stray animals are is meaningless? Is this all futile? When people save animals from flood is that, too, a foolish thing to do? Would it be better to simply kill all the strays but we refrain from doing so out of a moral obligation? Is refraining better than leaving them to their indignified, harsh lives? Was it wrong of us to think of catering to the dog in the first place? Could we have found some other solution? Is just not caring for them really the best choice at all? Can both the supervisor and we be right at the same time? I feel so helpless and my heart feels so heavy. I would appreciate if I had someone to talk to regarding this or even if someone just shared some valuable input regarding this. This whole incident shook my notion of what life is, what morality is and what my aim is. I don't know what I should do, which direction should I work toward so that I can finally listen to my heart without any consequences. I cruelly want to believe if we had sent out the dog for treatment and even if it became injured again, we would have done the right thing. There has to some solution to this, leaving them to die just doesn't seem right when the camp was a prosperous place and not a war torn place where even humans are struggling to get by or breathe.
