When to start a kid pitching? 8U
My kid loves baseball. Trying to give him the tools to succeed. In coach pitch this spring and summer (local area baseball, done by the 2nd week of June).
My kid has a strong arm and strong glove. Was placed at 3rd base early because he was the only kid that had the distance to make the throw 1st at 5 years old. His second position is short stop and has probably spent equal time on the bench as the outfield (he doesn’t really sit, the kid is a highlight reel)
Looking forward to this fall baseball when our kid pitch starts. What can we start now to prepare? Long toss seems to need to be a high priority. However I am lost on what else to do. I played rec as a 1st baseman ( think o-lineman with a great glove and average at best arm). I don’t know jack about the mound.
An added issue. My kid throws with his whole hand on the ball. Should I swap him over to 2 finger grip immediately or go to 3 then eventually 2? He has good size, should be easily topping 6’ as an adult.
We stopped throwing baseballs this winter to rest his arm. Yes we’ve thrown some footballs, yes we play with random balls inside the house, but his arm is well rested.
Played catch for the first time last week accuracy is predictably off. Speed predictably is slow.
Not trying to ramble just giving the whole picture.
