What’s the point of this wall? 1960s ranch home

What’s this thing for? I want to remove it and put a shelving unit maybe half the height of the current structure, on which I can sit some plants/books/do-dads. It’s not structural as I don’t believe it’s attached to the ceiling. Curious if anyone else has done this and how it turned out. Thanks for stopping by.
