Considering GrapheneOS on your Pixel? Check out these problems redditors encountered that you may want to consider first

GrapheneOS is a more secure OS which can only be installed on Google Pixel phones. A number of users here, including me, already use it and have posted about it.

But GrapheneOS is not for everyone.

This informative thread, "What were your less than ideal experiences with GrapheneOS?" was originally posted to r/privacy. It was deleted there because it was not a suitable topic for that sub. Fair enough.

However the experiences of real GrapheneOS users shared in the deleted thread are of particular value to r/GooglePixel readers who may be considering it. I am sharing those comments here to maintain their visibility.

The original thread is locked but you may share experience of your own in this thread.

For the record, I continue to be a GrapheneOS user and generally like it. However many of the problems cited in that thread are real. Some were not an issue for me because I put in some effort to work around them. Others, like no existing reliable backup software (a long-standing problem) and not having fully functional camera software - especially on a P7 Pro - may be unacceptable for some users.

Postscript

Thank you kind and anonymous redditor for your "Take my Energy" award for this post. It means a lot to me.

At the same time I received your award, GrapheneOS sent me a message I had been banned from r/grapheneos - specifically for sharing this helpful discussion here in r/GooglePixel.

GrapheneOS' behavior did not come as a surprise to me. I have personally witnessed GrapheneOS delete other peoples' posts, or downgrade them as "off topic", or ban people in different subs here on reddit, or in their own forum (where they can do so silently and without a record, unlike on reddit) over the past months. These disappearances have happened after a poster simply stated a reasonable observation or opinion about a shortcoming to them, or just a different point-of-view, or questioned something.

I still believe that GrapheneOS is a good privacy tool for me. I was eager to try it out for years before I could afford a Pixel to run it on. I am glad to have the extra privacy that it claims to offer. It makes me feel happier and less-stressed using my phone most of the time. I donated to GrapheneOS so the developers could eat and have a roof over their head for this valuable work.

But sometimes, as is always the case with increased security and privacy, using GrapheneOS is a hassle and there are tradeoffs - as many others have noted in the linked topic and in this one. Like everything in the world, GrapheneOS is imperfect and it most likely requires tradeoffs and extra effort to use. The rest of us accept such a reality. But, as shown by the reason of my ban, GrapheneOS acts like a discussion or suggestion that GrapheneOS falls short in any area as an all-out ad-hominem attack against all their developers.

GrapheneOS' public attitude and actions are regrettable within a project that is developing a valuable product for many current and potential users.
