New role in Strategic Finance
I’m a 26M recently qualified as CIMA and about to step into a new role in strategic finance at a multimedia conglomerate. My focus will be on content and sports rights valuation, distribution partnerships, pricing strategies, and driving propositional changes.
My background is mostly in traditional commercial finance (P&L ownership, finance business partnering, FP&A), but this will be my first step into a more strategic role. I’m curious—what can I expect from the shift to strategic finance? How is it different from what I’ve been doing?
Also, my Excel skills are solid, but I have limited experience with advanced financial modelling. I’m assuming this will be something I’ll need to pick up on the job—will that steep learning curve be a big issue?
For those who’ve made similar transitions, what are the pros and cons? How much more conceptually challenging is it compared to traditional finance roles?
Long-term, I’m aiming to move into corporate or group strategy—essentially in-house consulting. What kind of skills and experience should I be looking to build in this role to help me get there? And what are some common exit opportunities from strategic finance?
TLDR: 26M, newly CIMA qualified, starting a strategic finance role in a multimedia conglomerate (working on content/sports rights valuation, partnerships, pricing). Coming from a commercial finance background (P&L, FP&A), curious about the differences, challenges, and learning curve (esp. financial modelling). Also, looking for advice on skills to build for future moves into corporate/group strategy. What should I expect and prepare for?
Thanks
