\nHonestly the most important point here is that \u201cpeople should not ask artists to work for free\u201d, which I don\u2019t think you agree with based on you saying this artist is looking for \u201ceasy controversy\u201d. When really, any artist at any point in their life should be encouraged to point out the mistreatment they have faced during their career, in order to try and fix the treatment of themselves and their peers.
\n100% nobody should be expected to work for free - labor deserves wages and any attempt at extracting free labor is exploitation.
\n\nI\u2019m not excusing Chappell\u2019s involvement in late stage capitalism, especially with the backing of Universal Music Group. I do think that her statement at the Grammys is still a good one and just think that an email from a stylist\u2019s assistant/intern that misspells the artist\u2019s name isn\u2019t exactly a smoking gun of total hypocrisy
\nNo one is critiquing Chappell for \u201cparticipating in late stage capitalism\u201d - that is an incorrect and/or disingenuous read of the situation. Late stage capitalism doesn\u2019t have us all out here trying to scam artists out of money while making buckets of money on tour.
\n\nIt\u2019s icky behaviour and it does come across as hypocritical. That\u2019s a member of her team, acting on her behalf. If you want to have morals and take public stands, you should also be communicating those standards to your team/people you work with when you are the artist in charge.
\n\nAnd why critique late stage capitalism but parrot the narrative that people in charge are free from responsibility in the actions of people just because they could potentially be classed as \u2018contractors\u2019? That\u2019s a common way large ass companies try to shirk their own responsibilities/obligations and throw workers under the bus.
\nYeah, even if she somehow wasn\u2019t aware of her stylist doing this, it\u2019s her responsibility to make sure her team knows she doesn\u2019t want anyone doing this going forward. It might not have occurred to her prior to this, but as the \u201cboss\u201d of her team, she is responsible for their actions (IMO).
\n\nI was always taught (as a lawyer, so obviously different) to NEVER throw a lower-ranking (sounds bad but I don\u2019t know how else to put it) person under the bus publicly, whether that was a more junior lawyer, an assistant, a paralegal, whoever. You were responsible for your work, which includes the work of the team reporting to you, period. It\u2019s your job to train them, to review their work, and you take the blame (at least publicly) for their mistakes (because you should have caught them, and even if you couldn\u2019t, you are the \u201cface\u201d of the team, as the most senior person who has the most responsibility and is receiving the highest pay). Lots of people don\u2019t follow that, but I believe in it really strongly. And I\u2019ve been thrown under the bus by more senior people and have lost a lot of respect for them when they do this. It doesn\u2019t make the excuser/boss look good, it makes them look spineless and like they don\u2019t take responsibility for their team.
\n\nObviously this is a different environment, with people acting separately from each other without the crazy amount of review/oversight that lawyers do. But if it were me (and I genuinely didn\u2019t know), I\u2019d consider it my responsibility to apologize publicly for this. And, going forward, I would make it explicitly clear that anyone hired on my behalf needs to be paid properly/appropriately, and that \u201cexposure in lieu of pay\u201d is never appropriate. Because I\u2019m the team leader/face of the team, you know? They\u2019re working on my behalf, it\u2019s done in my name (especially when it\u2019s for a celebrity like this, compared to working at a company or a law firm), and it\u2019s my responsibility to make it clear I don\u2019t endorse this behaviour and then set policies to make sure it doesn\u2019t continue.
\n\nCelebrities don\u2019t usually have management training, and, frankly, lots of people who do have it still blame the people reporting to them. But it\u2019s shitty and I wouldn\u2019t do it myself. A good leader doesn\u2019t behave like that.
