what happened to little ajax?

I assumed he died, obviously, but man wasn't little Ajax like... a child? why would they send him to war😭😭

I haven't read the oddysey so I don't know what really happened, but it makes sad think about the death of poor little Ajax... How little was he?? 12?? 13??
