Trying to figure out which spell my DM used
We asked a wizard to point us to a creature we could fight, so he cast a spell on a forked twig that pointed towards one and gave it to us. As far as I understand, the forked twig is used only for Locate Object so I'm having a hard time figuring out which spell he used. Unless it's homebrew I don't understand what this is.
From that session's notes:
"At this point, the Divination Stick still points toward the beast, even though it is dead. When <party member holding stick> gets closer to the body of the beast the stick points towards its head. <Different party member> dissects the beast and takes out its brain, and the Divination Stick points to a point between the brain and the lizard’s head, then it stops pointing at anything. ... We ask <wizard> about what we saw with the stick pointing toward the area between the beast’s head and its brain. He says that he cast the spell on the stick towards the energy he felt, so it could be the beast’s energy, but that would have ended when the beast died, so it might have been a spell that controls its behavior instead."
Our campaign has a theme of controlled beasts that we can't quite figure out yet, but this beast was most likely being controlled because of odd behavior it displayed before we killed it. We thought this was relevant because of the spell still working up until we took it's brain out. This has me thinking of two options:
- This spell is Locate Object and was cast on an object inside the beast's head that we didn't find that broke when we took the brain out, ending the spell.
- This spell isn't Locate Object and is something else entirely, which is where I need help figuring out if it could be another spell.
Edit: I'm not trying to solve it for my character, I as a player want to know. My level 4 character obviously doesn't know enough spells to rule out the use of a forked twig in other spells, so she'd have to figure it out through the narrative. This is for my curiosity.
