Songs taken down by Spotify: what now?
I got a message today from Distrokid that Spotify was removing several of my songs due to bot activity.
I have only ever used Submithub and Groover. A long time ago (last year, I think) I did sign up for Boost Collective (who made the untrue claim they do not use bots ever). They did absolutely nothing and I cancelled after a few days when I realized they were a scam. Every other release has been either word of mouth, pumping my own stuff on the internet, or Groover/Submithub.
Last month I did get a sudden spike in streams for several songs from Norway - I thought nothing of it, because I had just gotten onto a couple playlists (through Submithub), but I suppose it’s always possible that the curators used bots. I have no way of knowing.
Long story short, DK tells me my songs are taken down. I filled out the form, told them I understood, and told them what services I used (all listed here). Do I now need to reupload my music to Spotify? My streams essentially reverted to zero, which makes me think Spotify just removed the streams….? I don’t know.
What is the process? DK has been pretty unclear on next steps.
I also do not want this to happen again, and have no interest in fake streams or fans. How can I avoid this? Are Submithub and Groover a problem too?
Thank you.
