Mechanical strategies useless?

What are your opinions on mechanical strategies? I’m backtesting several ones and looking for an edge. Someone pointed out to me though that if you do it 100% mechanical you are competing with bots and algos, and most retail traders that are profitable have some degree of discretionary element to it.

Honestly it makes sense to me that mechanical strategies from us retail traders are doomed to fail but is that really true?
