2% rewards cheque - cash back

Does anyone know if you can still do the “buy bananas (or whatever) and get the rest of your 2% cheque back as “change”? I know you can’t straight cash it out, but this would be essentially the same. Can anyone confirm if they’ve successfully done this in Alberta this year? (To be clear, I’m talking about the 2% exec rewards cheque, not Mastercard)
