Just finished the Public Safety saga, someone help me understand the hype? Does it get better in saga 2?(spoiler)
So I watched the anime when it came out and loved it. Thought the pacing was great, it's stupidly well directed and I liked the chartacters and animation. I missed it and it feels like it's gonna be one of those animes that's gonna take 12 years to get made till the end, so I started reading the manga from the first chapter 3 days ago and just finished the Public Safety Saga.
Loved reading the anime arcs and loved the Reze Arc, but after that it was just straight downhill. There's never any character building at all. It's literally just a crappy battle shounen that gets super convoluted and a sequence of badly paced sequence of battles that are just boring as well.
It feels like after those arcs it stopped using any brains and it's just:
-random super powerful devil shows up kills a million civilians and a few characters you barely got to like cause there's 0 character development.
-don't worry chainsaw boy over here never dies and is super powerful just because
-screams very loud after reviving for the 100th time and kills everybody
-if not him, worry not, Makima can just do whatever the fuck she wants anyways
(spoiler) The only bit that there's remotely any character development again is the sequence when Denji gets depressed and goes to Makima's house where he decides he wants to be her dog. But that lasts one chapter and we're back to Makima killing everybody and it turns out she's evil (kinda). But don't worry, she can be defeated by Denji eating a bunch of food (is the food supposed to be her?)
Also the gun devil arc felt so anti climatic story wise, loved how he went about writing the seconds of the gun devil appearance and the events though.
I don't mind not knowing the logic and lore of everything. I don't need everything explained to me. But that's when there's really solid character development and you can really be involved with them and love and hurt through them. An example of this is I love New Genesis finale. I don't care about the plot, the angels and where they come from and why. By that point I just wanna follow Shinji and his connections.
Problem is Chainsaw Man starts that way and then just becomes a stupidly fast paced no brains battle shounen. One of the highlights of the story for me is the scene they all go out drinking. It's building characters and you're having a good time with them so you can care later about their battles. After Reze this never happens anymore maybe except for the scene Denji takes care of Power at home.
Did I just not get the manga cause I read it too fast? And should I keep reading it? Art is beautiful and has some great style of writing at points but ultimately the story fellreally short for me. Do others agree?
