Ball fetching/playing

My cat is very playful and full of energy, so I bought him a toy ball and he absolutely loves it. I would throw it a across the house and he would go nuts running after it, but then that's about it after reaching the ball he has no clue what to do, he doesn't even look at it or play with it. Is there a way I could teach him to fetch it or get him to actually play with it?
