I still think it's crazy that my grandparents and great grandparents were affected by things like diabetes and gout when they didn't even have mcdonalds or high fructose corn syrup!

My dad's uncle had his foot cut off due to diabetes, and I thought that was wild because he grew up in an era where the sweetest thing they had back then was... turkish delights? Baklava? Which always reminds me of this:

Meanwhile we have reeses peanut butter cups and creme eggs, which are basically sugar and hfcs incarnate:

Like yeah they still had butter, and as for gout they did have fish and seafood, chicken, beef... although beef and mutton used to actually be pretty expensive so they'd subsist on other protein sources at the time. Yet there's a risk of gout in my family due to other extended family members having it. In a time when they barely had pickup wagons let alone cars, and had to actually move around everywhere physically. They didn't even have modern day convenience that makes us susceptible to laziness like driving everywhere, getting fast food at the drive-through on our way home, etc.

Yet these health related afflictions were still common for them instead of unheard of. Just think that's interesting, that even without modern day it all comes down to the individual when it comes to health, wanted to share and see if anyone had similar stories.
