Is it possible to switch the speed limiter warning off permanently on newer vehicles? Is it legal to do so?

Whilst I know it’s mandatory for EU car manufacturers to install these now, it’s frustrating how inaccurate these are, especially on UK roads.

I’ve been thinking of downsizing my company van over the last six or so months, and whilst in the garage for repairs at the minute, I’ve hired a brilliant smaller van to trial and it’s working out really well to a point I’m thinking of leasing one permanently. But the only issue I’ve had with it, is the speed limiter beeping at me constantly. I can turn it off but it’s deep in the settings menu and only for one trip before automatically turning back on.

  1. A lot of 30mph roads I drive down on my routes and where I live, have adjacent 20mph side streets that are accessible on a diagonal road. The radar picks up the 20mph signs and bleeps for the duration until I hit another road sign, which are scarce on long 30mph stretches.

  2. The GPS also picks up incorrect speed limits.

  3. The speedometer isn’t accurate and is between 1mph - 3mph out depending on speed. I follow my sat-nav’s speed, but just get warned when doing so.

  4. I was leaving a customers’ premises this afternoon who have a 10mph limit around their site. As I drove onto the main road of a 30mph zone, it still assumed it was 10mph and continued to loudly beep until I got on the motorway a mile or two down the road.

It’s just one thing majorly putting me off getting one of these vehicles properly, but it’s such a frustrating, inaccurate system.

Has anybody had any joy deactivating these in newer vehicles? Are there any legal routes of disabling them?
