Must have features for your BI solution
I will try to keep this as brief as possible.
We have multiple product lines with silo'd and differing platforms and are ramping up on a complete rebuild of everything to a consolidated platform. Our data maturity is abhorrent. The first stage of this major project is to get our data into a warehouse that will serve up/preserve the legacy system data and be set up to ingest what happens in the future.
We had consultants in to build us scaffolding in the cloud to next get into moving our data there and start building dashboards, reports, and analytics capabilities. This is I believe in an Azure data lake and the tool of choice will be Power BI.
I am a key business stakeholder in this project. I would like to come with an opening bid of some standard feature requirements that all our development for this project should consider. We do currently have reporting capabilities to support our individual programs.
This is a very green field project and I feel we have the opportunity to set things up for future flexibility. I have looked into some features available in some different platforms and would like some feedback on if what I'm suggesting is actually reasonable and ideas for other requirements that should be included as a standard that I missed or some lessons you have learned. Of course, very specific reporting needs may need to break from these guidelines but I feel all our development should consider these. The ones I indicated with an * are the ones I'm most wondering on the feasability. I saw them mentioned for some platforms and thought given how new this all is I don't think it would be bad to work this in now and it will likely serve us well in the future
- KPIs and summary reports should be drillable down
- Detail report should be drillable up
- responsive web design (or basically mobile and PC enabled reporting)
- geocoded and map visualization when appropriate
