What do you do for headphones?

Recently our 6yo nv level 2 will not wear his headphones when we are in public, just plugs his ears and wants to leave. We have older children who are in sports so we need to be there for them as well. And want to take our 6yo out as well. Anyone with similar situations? What did you do. Thanks
