What is the appeal of shooting nudes?
Hi fellow photographers. I follow a number of photography related sub-reddits from ITAP to photocritique; analog to portraits; not to mention this subreddit. And I love all of them - I've learnt things from fellow Redditors, picked up a few skills and provided advice that people seem to like (not to blow my own trumpet). However, in recent times, there seems to be more photography posts featuring nudes in my feed. I'm not against nudity and I have nothing against the models, the photographers or the Redditors who author the posts. Nor am I averse to seeing nudity. I perceive it to be a beautiful and valid form of artistic expression (when done tastefully). But it has, to me, reached a point where I find the nude/human element unnecessary in some of the photographs.
Admittedly, I'm not professionally or formally trained in the visual arts or photography, so it could be ignorance on my part. What I haven't quite appreciated is the appeal of shooting nudes. I've even encountered photographers and artists on photo walks who encouraged me to shoot nudes and do life drawing, but I've never understood the underlying reasoning/benefit/lessons, nor have I ever had the desire to shoot nudes.
I'm interested to hear from the good folks of this community what can be taken away from shooting and viewing photos featuring an unclothed subject (vs clothed) and whether it is something that is really worth trying.
(Genuine question, no trolls please.)
