Is Canon R7 Auto Focus Better than 80D?

I got into bird photography due to walking. I'd bring my Canon 80D along, just in case I'd see something; especially after missing a hawk that was FREAKING RIGHT THERE.

While I liked the 80D, and it was pretty good for sports, I thought the auto focus was kind of insane when birding; it often HATED focusing on the bird RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRAME.

It loved to focus on things on one of the 1/3 lines.

Sounds like the Canon R7 AF is better?

And any idea what I was doing wrong to get it to not focus on the differently colored object in the freaking middle of the frame?
