Complicated panel/solar/wiring situation, looking for help.
Looking to install solar. My electric panel was upgraded by the previous owner to a 200amp panel but they are using size 4 wires. I called my local utility (LADWP) who would normally be able to pull these, but said that the conduits are transite (sp?) and they can't pull it because it would cause asbestos. Found this out because the panel wasn't permitted and the local building/safety inspector came out and noticed the wires are too small.
Some questions:
- if I'm using size 4 wires now, does that mean I'm not using the full 200 amp? I have a subpanel that controls all of the housing electricity, and have a L2 tesla charger installed that's directly connected to the panel
- am I in any immediate danger because the wires are so small?
- What are my options moving forward? Get solar, no solar? Solar company mentioned I could downgrade to a 100 amp panel
Pretty frustrated that I'm finding out all of this now but want to do what makes the most sense!
