Should I be an electrician?
Current web developer and front-end software engineer of ~8 years, here, and I hate my job / career and am looking for a change.
I want a job that is stable, where I can provide consistent value, and have a clear purpose; one that doesn't make me feel inadequate and exhausted all the time with how pedantic and yet intellectually challenging it is (to me). I'd also like the opportunity to at some point start my own business with the skills I've acquired.
The trades may be a fit for me, I think, and being an electrician is one of the more lauded paths in that space, but I'm worried about some things. Namely, I'm not great at math. I can do it, but I often fudge up numbers and make silly mistakes with my arithmetic. (In fact, I'm not a naturally technical thinker in general, and that's one of the major reasons I want to change careers. I've always been more of a humanities / social sciences / creative big picture guy, but good luck making money with skills like that).
My thinking is that being an electrician is technical enough to be a solid career, but not so technical that it will scramble my brain like software does.
On the plus sides: I'm a natural craftsman and have always enjoyed building things (that's what got me into software in the first place), am conscientious, a diligent worker, and pay attention to details. While I've not had a physical job before, I do work out regularly and am in good shape.
With all that in mind, based on your experience as an electrician, does this field sound like a good fit for me? If not, is there another trade you would recommend? Thanks in advanced for your time.
