Canada’s “Boycott America” Movement: Do People Realize How Intertwined We Are?
I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-American sentiment going around lately, with calls to boycott U.S. companies as a response to recent political and economic tensions. But it makes me wonder… do people actually realize just how dependent Canada is on the U.S. for trade, technology, and daily life?
Think about it:
- Over half of Canada’s total trade is with the U.S. That’s billions of dollars in goods moving across the border every day.
- Many of our most used platforms--Reddit, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix--are all American.
- The devices most of us use daily (iPhones, Windows PCs, etc.) are designed and largely controlled by U.S. companies.
- A huge portion of our energy, food, and medicine either comes from or is deeply tied to American supply chains.
- Even entertainment--how many Canadians boycott Hollywood movies, American TV shows, or U.S. music?
I’m not saying people can’t disagree with U.S. policies (trust me, plenty of Americans do too), but the whole “We’re a sovereign nation! Boycott America!” movement feels like a massive lack of self-awareness. If the U.S. sneezes, Canada catches a cold--whether we like it or not.
What’s the plan here? A return to the barter system? Mass adoption of Bing? Curious to hear people’s thoughts.
