Message from the Mods - about the pause
Hi, everyone. K here from the Discord team.
I’m here to address some concerns that many of you have. I want to explain what the planning of 50501 has looked like from our perspective so you can understand what we're doing and what we're asking from you.
First, we apologize for the mixed messages and inconsistent answers from moderators. As a grassroots movement, the mod team was not a cohesive unit before this began. We all came together organically because we had skills to offer that the movement needed at the time. We are still growing and learning alongside you, and as volunteers with lives of our own, we aren’t always available to provide input on decisions that, realistically, need to be made collectively. We're still figuring out the best ways to communicate with you, so please bear with us while we work toward a more unified approach.
Second, we strongly encourage you to continue protesting and organizing in your states. The Discord state channels remain open as spaces for coordination. This movement operates as an informal coalition, meaning 50501 will always be your movement. The message will always be yours to shape, grow, and evolve as needed. The events will always be yours to plan. We firmly believe that the American people can only stand in solidarity if they have the right to advocate for what’s best for their own communities. We would never take that away from you—just as we would never want anyone to take it from us.
Third, I want to explain why we paused activity on the official pages. The issue we faced was that, for all 50 states to organize cohesively, we needed a system for managing permits, safety protocols, legal information, and resource distribution. At the time, we lacked the infrastructure to handle this—there was no event platform, no organized way to collect volunteers, no efficient way to identify or contact state organizers, and no centralized method to gather or distribute this information. Many people wanted a credible source to verify that these protests were well-intentioned and organized. In response, the moderators stepped up to fill that gap.
We decided to partner with Political Revolutions because they are an entirely volunteer-led activist group with established experience and resources—something we, as newcomers, needed. We collaborated with No Voice Unheard because they had already begun gathering information and connecting with state organizers before we had. We also worked with Build the Resistance, which provided a platform to publish this information cohesively while we set up event logistics through Pol Rev’s event platform. These organizations were absolutely vital in making this possible. Without them, we would never have been able to pull this together for you.
The role of the moderators has always been to gather and provide information for you. We have resisted committing to another event not because we want control over the movement, but because we need time to build the necessary infrastructure. To be completely transparent, we pulled this together with metaphorical duct tape and bubblegum. We succeeded only because so many people believed in the cause and remained committed to the message of non-violence.
You are always welcome to organize protests—this coalition has no governing body, so you are free to use the 50501 name whenever you like. We cannot and will not stop you. We encourage you to always show solidarity when you protest. However, 50501 was created to unify all 50 states in a show of solidarity. If we want to continue doing that effectively, we need time to sort out the infrastructure, ensuring that future organizing efforts are more efficient, safe, and accessible.
The Occupy Wall Street movement was an incredible effort that almost succeeded. However, it ultimately failed as a grassroots movement because it lacked the necessary infrastructure to keep organizers connected. The chaos we experienced while pulling this together could destroy our momentum if we don’t take the time to address the logistical details that many people have asked for. We are not trying to take over your movement. We are trying to provide the resources needed to sustain it.
What We’re Working On
Here’s what we’re focusing on during this time:
- Establishing a media and press team to help protect the anonymity of protesters and organizers who prefer not to engage with the media.
- Strengthening relationships with our partner organizations so we can continue using their platforms for event organization.
- Determining the best way to offer organizing spaces, whether that means improving Discord or exploring other platforms.
- Compiling verified resources for safety and legal questions in a single, easily accessible place.
- Gathering permit information for each state to assist new organizers so they don’t have to search for it on their own.
…Among many other things.
Once we have a solid system in place, we want to open these resources up to all of you so you can engage in the ways that work best for you. We don’t want to take over your movement. We don’t want to lead your movement. You are the leaders of your movement.
Our goal is to become the best grassroots organizing information hub possible—so that you can keep building momentum.
Edit: Originally had unedited copy underneath this too, sorry about that.
