How to make object mesh?

I’m very new to 3D printing so please bear with me..

I made an object in tinkercad, imported the stl file into blender and followed the steps to try and make it like a hexagon mesh, but it doesn’t seem to be working?

How do I do this? Is blender even the correct program to do that? Example of type of mesh I want my object to be attached photo.
